Iran has confirmed the death of Ali Larijani, with the country’s Supreme National Security Council describing the killing as an assassination after Israel earlier claimed responsibility for targeting him.
In a statement carried by Mehr News Agency, the council praised Larijani’s lifetime of service, saying he had “reached his long-cherished wish” and “attained the blessed rank of martyrdom in the service front.”
The confirmation comes amid escalating tensions following Israeli announcements of targeted strikes against Iranian-linked figures.
Separately, Iranian authorities and state media also mourned the killing of Gholamreza Soleimani, a senior commander of the Basij paramilitary force.
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf described Soleimani as a “glorious general,” saying he had “achieved martyrdom in the battle against the most evil enemies of humanity,” alongside his deputy and several other soldiers.
In another statement, the Basij’s media arm said Soleimani’s death marked the loss of “an inspiring pillar and field leader” who had long guided the organization with “strategic vision” and a strong belief in popular mobilization.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) earlier confirmed that Soleimani was killed in what it described as an “American-Zionist” attack, following Israeli claims that he had been targeted in overnight operations.
The developments signal a further escalation in the long-running shadow conflict between Iran and Israel, raising concerns about a broader regional confrontation.
